How Much Does Window Tint Cost?

Almost every tint quote you get will be a single number with no explanation, which makes shops impossible to compare. The number is driven by three things, and once you know what they are you can tell in about thirty seconds whether a quote is cheap because the shop is efficient or cheap because the film is going to turn purple in two summers.

Film Type Is Most of the Price

There are three broad tiers and they are genuinely different products. Dyed film is the cheapest. It darkens the glass and does very little else, and in Alabama sun it is the film that fades, turns purple and bubbles, usually inside a few years. Carbon film sits in the middle: it holds its color, does not interfere with signal, and rejects some heat. Ceramic film is the top tier, and it is the only one that rejects a serious amount of infrared heat without going dark.

That last point is the one worth paying for here. A cheap 20 percent dyed film and a quality 35 percent ceramic film look similar from the outside, but the ceramic car is meaningfully cooler to sit in. If you have ever gotten into a black car in a Huntsville parking lot in July, that difference is the entire reason ceramic film exists.

How Many Windows, and What Shape They Are

A two-front-window job is a fraction of the cost of a full car. A full car is typically the two fronts, two rears and the back glass, and the back glass is where the labor is: it is curved in two directions and on most vehicles it has defroster lines that cannot be damaged. Some back windows have to be heat-shrunk to shape before they go in, which is skilled work and takes time.

This is why quotes on a coupe with a steep rear window and quotes on a truck with a flat slider are not comparable, and why any shop quoting a flat price for every car without asking what you drive is not really quoting you.

Removal, Warranty and the Hidden Costs

If the car already has tint on it, it has to come off first, and old dyed film that has baked onto the glass for a decade is genuinely unpleasant to remove. Ask whether removal is included or added. It is one of the most common places a quote grows after you arrive.

The other thing to compare is warranty. Quality film carries a manufacturer warranty against bubbling, peeling, cracking and color change, and a real shop backs the install as well as the film. A cheap job with no warranty that has to be stripped and redone in three years costs more than the good job did, and you pay for removal twice.

Where the Ranges Land

As general market ranges, and not as an Original Auto Styling quote: two front windows in a basic film is usually the cheapest job any tint shop offers, a full car in carbon film sits in the low hundreds, and a full car in a quality ceramic film is typically several hundred dollars, with large SUVs and trucks at the top. Windshield film, where it is legal above the AS-1 line, is priced separately.

Why is ceramic tint more expensive than regular tint?

Because it is doing a different job. Standard dyed film darkens glass. Ceramic film contains non-conductive ceramic particles that reject infrared heat while staying relatively light, so you can run a legal shade and still get a much cooler interior. It also does not fade or turn purple, and it does not interfere with GPS, cell or keyless entry signals.

Is it cheaper to tint just the front windows?

Yes, substantially. A lot of customers already have factory privacy glass on the rear and only need the two fronts matched. That is the cheapest job in the shop. Just be aware that factory privacy glass is tinted in the glass and rejects very little heat, so if your goal is a cooler cabin rather than privacy, filming the rear glass as well is what actually achieves it.

Does old tint have to be removed first, and does that cost extra?

Yes it has to come off, and you should ask every shop whether removal is included in the quote. Old dyed film that has cooked onto the glass for years takes real time to strip, especially on a rear window with defroster lines that must not be damaged. Removal is one of the most common reasons a quote goes up after the car arrives.

How long does window tint last?
